Care workers who found love at Dora Matthews House tie the knot

Employees at a Gloucestershire care home who met and fell in love at work were married at Inn on the Wye on Friday 24th June.

Jon Meek, 39, and Sarah Hughes 32, who both live in Coleford, met at Dora Matthews House care home for older people in March 2018 and started dating a year later.

Workplace romance blossomed despite the couple having to navigate incredibly difficult circumstances early on in their relationship- Jon’s eldest son was diagnosed with Leukaemia in January 2020 and is still regularly seen at Gloucester Royal Hospital and their work roles as Care & Support Worker and Shift Leader meant they were delivering care and support to tenants at Dora Matthews throughout the entirety of the Covid pandemic.

With adversity and a global crisis as a backdrop the couple decided they were perfect together and got engaged in February 2021 and pronounced their wedding vows this week.

Commenting on the wedding day, Jon, says:

“Sarah and I have been through a lot early on in our relationship but it’s made us stronger. We want to build a life together and, for us, getting married signifies our commitment and unity to each other.

“Our wedding was held in a traditional pub in the English countryside. It was just what we wanted- celebrating with our family and friends with lots of great food, dancing and laughter.”

Julie Element, Manager at Ambient Support’s Dora Matthews House, says:

“The past two years have been extremely difficult for people working in the social care sector. Jon and Sarah have been exemplarily throughout, always smiling while delivering high quality support and care to the people who need in most in our community- and all while Jon’s son has been terribly ill.

“It’s been very warming to see the couple’s support for each other- they are both very caring and kind people and we’re delighted they have found happiness together.

“Their wedding has brought joy to Dora Matthews and everyone is very excited to congratulate the pair on their return and look through their wedding photographs.”

On working in care, Sarah says:

“My mum inspired me to work in care and it’s been my career for 12 years now. I have progressed to Shift Leader and have completed various training qualifications and NVQs. I love being a carer and working for Ambient as we make a huge difference to the quality of people’s lives, it’s a very enriching and rewarding career.”
